Head of Adult Services - Librarian III

Open Date: May 8, 2020

Title/Classification: Head of Adult Services - Librarian III

Reports To: Library Director

Schedule:Full-time position (37.5 hrs/wk) includes at least one evening per week and alternate Fridays and Saturdays.

Summary of Duties: The Department Head of Adult Services is responsible for the total management and operation of all aspects of the largest library department and its integration into the overall operations of the library.

Qualifications: MLS from ALA accredited school of library/information science; excellent oral and written communications skills, five years progressively more responsible relevant experience, including at least three years of supervising staff. Must have the ability to make independent judgments, and to counsel and mentor others. Comprehensive knowledge of adult collections and services. Leads staff in providing services which meet the community's needs. Guides the staff in special projects of community interest. Proficiency in current and emerging technologies. Knowledge of Sierra/Encore an added plus. Proficiency in Spanish, or other language prevalent in New Britain is welcomed.

Responsibilities: Supervises departmental staff. Manages all aspects of collection development, programming, services and social media. Develops, documents, and implements long and short-term goals for the department. Prepares reports and statistical analyses, makes presentations to the Director, community organizations and others as required. Cultivates community connections and outreach to the community. Serves on the Director's Management Team to plan and coordinate library wide projects and programs, share information, and participate in strategic planning. Represents the library in New Britain and to the professional community.

Teen Services' Clerk I

Open Date: July 28, 2020

Title/Classification: Teen Services' Clerk I

Starting Salary: $14.32 per hour

Schedule:20 hours per week

Reports To: Teen Librarian

Summary of Duties: Performs a wide range of clerical/manual functions. Work involves frequent customer contact in person and by telephone and the use of computers. Position will cover public desk in Teen Room. May be cross-trained to work at other service points within the department. Schedule includes at least one night per week and alternate Saturdays. This is an entry level position. Position description available on request.

Qualifications: High school diploma or GED.  Proficient computer skills essential, particularly in Microsoft Office Suite.  Some experience working in a library or retail setting preferred.  Fluency in Spanish/Polish or other locally prevalent language preferred.

Human Resource Generalist

CLASSIFICATION : HUMAN RESOURCE GENERALIST

POSITION DESCRIPTION:Under the supervision of the Director of the New Britain Public Library, the Human Resource Generalist is responsible for the day-to-day administration of benefits, recruiting, labor relations, employee on-boarding and exiting/termination, and any policies and procedures related to HR. Identifies opportunities for improvement and resolves problems. Provides training and education to employees including workshops, manuals, handbooks, and reports. Manages employee records and files.

JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:

• Responsible for full cycle recruiting.
• Responsible for employee benefits, programs, and education. Evaluate benefit contract bids. Trains employees on management of their own benefits.
• Manages the libraries 403B retirement plan.
• Provide training programs related to employee development, such as aligning management initiatives with the organizational goals.
• Produces employee handbooks, policy manuals, and any other materials.
• Coach and provide guidance to management and employees in the areas of performance management, organization, and change management.
• Cover all legal compliance for human resources federal and state requirements. Leads the libraries compliance with all existing governmental and labor reporting requirements including any related to the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), ACA (Affordable Care Act) the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Department of Labor, worker compensation, and so forth.
• Conducts objective investigations in response to grievances and/or complaints.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Licenses
• Bachelors degree in Human Resource Management
Experience:
• Three years of HR experience working in a union environment
• Experience working with senior management and a Board of Trustees
• Effective, articulate, and dynamic communicator, both orally and in writing for multiple audiences.
Skill & Ability:
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and build trust is essential
• Ability to communicate with officials, supervisors, and staff in a professional, courteous manner.
• Ability to analyze HR data. Ability to analyze data in regards to assessing new products, services, and vendors
• Team player with strong conflict management and influencing/negotiation skills.

Tutor

Title/Classification: Tutor

Starting Salary: $25 an hour

Schedule: Monday and Wednesday afternoons,  4-6:00 pm.

Summary of Duties:The library is currently looking for tutors for our Homework Center to  tutor  middle school through high school students in  language arts, math and  science.  

The service is provided by grant funding from the American Savings Foundation.    We are looking for teachers, graduate and undergraduate college students or professionals with strong backgrounds in the above subjects to do tutoring on  Monday and Wednesday afternoons,  4-6:00 pm.,  starting mid September.  

The Center is not open during school vacations, holidays or when school is cancelled for inclement weather.  Pay is $25 an hour.
