Open Position - Reference Librarian I

Title/Classification: Reference Librarian I
Reports To: Head of Adult Services
Starting Salary: $50,896.71
Schedule: Full-time position (37.5 hrs/wk) includes at least one evening per week and alternate Fridays & Saturdays.
Responsibilities: Performs reference and reader advisory services. Selection of adult non-fiction and collection maintenance. Assists with adult programming and bringing new services to the library. Assists patrons with technology and accessing the Library’s digital resources. Teaching technology skills in classes and one-on-one. Additional duties as assigned, which includes backup on various service points.
Qualifications: A Masters in Library Science degree from an ALA accredited Library Science program. Familiarity with adult services and literature with strong readers advisory, computer and technology skills and social media savvy. Web design, STEAM programming, digital media/mobile technology, community outreach experience and diversity initiatives preferred. Creative, enthusiastic, and curious learner with an interest in makerspaces. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and a strong commitment to customer service. Two years experience and Spanish/Polish proficiency desirable.

Title/Classification: Children's Librarian I - part time
Reports To: Manager of Children’s Services.
Starting Salary: $27,144.00
Schedule: Part-time position (20 hrs/wk) includes up to two evenings per week and alternate Fridays & Saturdays.
Summary of Duties: Responsibility for both in-library and outreach programs and
providing reference and reader’s advisory services. Participates in
materials selection and collection maintenance.
Additional: May be in charge in the absence of the Department Manager.
Qualifications: MLS from ALA accredited school of library/information science;
Public library experience in Children’s Services preferred. Computer
literacy required; working knowledge of hardware preferred. Proficiency
in Polish, Spanish, or another language prevalent in New Britain preferred. Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle.
Demonstrated ability to work with children and excellent interpersonal
skills in general; considerable knowledge of children’s literature and child
development; excellent communication skills, both oral and written; ability
to interact with a wide variety of people.

Responsibilities: Classifies and catalogs library materials of all types, formats and in
various languages. Maintains quality of entries to ensure authority
control and quality of database. Utilizes appropriate tools to create
original bibliographic records according to commonly used
practices.
Qualifications: A Masters in Library Science Degree from an ALA accredited
library science program and one year of cataloging experience
required. Knowledge of AACR2 and RDA and DDC, OCLC, and
MARC format. Understanding of cataloging principles and
practices. Ability to use professional judgment in the application of
library rules and procedures.
